State Aid to Fair

Through enabling act 1122, passed during the regular session of the 1969 Legislature, the Agriculture Center Board is co-sponsor of this year’s National Peanut Festival and Fair and pays a portion of the premiums, prizes and awards listed in the program.

General Rules and Regulations

1.   Applications must be in no later than Friday, October 23, 2009.  Mail your entry to National Peanut

      Festival, 5622 US Hwy. 231 South, Dothan, Alabama 36301.

 

2.   All entries must be placed between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 29th, in the Festival

      Premium Building.  No entries will be accepted any other time. 

 

3.   Plants must remain through Sunday, November 8th and CANNOT be picked up without a claim check.   

      Pickup time will be Sunday, November 9, from 1-3:00 p.m.  Entries not picked up during this time become   

      the property of the Festival.

 

4.   Only one entry per person per LOT.  Each entry is to be picked up by the person that won the prize

      whether it is a ribbon, money or a tray.

 

5.   The Festival will exercise every possible means of care, but cannot be responsible for loss or damage.

 

6.   Entry forms must be completed with class and lot indicated.   All specimens must be named, giving genus

      and species.  Please note the change in the form.  The Dept. Code for Horticulture is HOR.  The class and lot 

      numbers are listed below.  There may not be a lot for each class, if not leave this blank on the entry form.

 

7.   Show is judged by state certified judges.

 

8.    A silver tray winner is not eligible the following year to enter the same plant.

 

9.   Competition is open to amateur gardeners whether members of a Garden Club or not.

 

10.  The committee can reclassify any entry at their discretion.

 

11.  In Cut Flower Class – containers are furnished.  No artificial coloring.  Cut specimens should not have any

       foliage below the water line.

 

12.  All horticulture specimens must be fresh plant materials grown by exhibitors.  Container grown plants

       must have been in exhibitor’s possession at least 90 days except for multiple plantings, which must have

       been in exhibitor’s possession at least six weeks.

13.  Each class must have three or more entries to be judged.

 

14.  No professional or commercial growers are allowed to exhibit.

 

15.  No plant over 250 lbs. will be accepted, unless pre-approved by Committee Chairman (due to the inability

        to move the plant around for category placement).

1ST, 2ND and 3RD Place ribbons will be awarded in each class.  One rosette winner per division.  All rosette winners will compete for 1st Place Overall and 2nd Place Overall.  Silver trays are donated by KAWASAKI OF DOTHAN.

JUDING CRITERIA

1.  Plant Appearance

                                                                                a.  Overall appearance.

                                                                                b.  Uniform shape-indicating good rotation.

                                                                                c.  Clean pot and clean leaves. (No Shine)

                                                                                d.  Plant centered in pot.

                                                                                e.  Pot need to compliment plant. (PLANT IS BEING JUDGED NOT POT.)

                                                                                f.  No freshly dug or repotted plants.

                                                                                g.  No more than one plant in pot unless it is a dish garden.

                                                                                h.  Healthy color and free from scale & other diseases.

                                                                                i.   Plants should be neatly groomed.
